Club History

Formation and Early Years

Maraetai Tennis Club was established on December 15, 1962. Originally, the club was situated at the corner of Te Pene Road and Maraetai Drive, sharing premises with the Maraetai Bowling Club. The old tennis court markings are still visible today in the bowling club’s car park.

Relocation and Growth

In the 1980s, recognizing the need for more space due to the growth of both clubs, a steering committee was formed to advocate for new land. The effort was successful, and in 1986, the new courts at Te Puru Park were opened. An honours board was installed at that time, commemorating all club champions from 1986 to the present day.

The clubhouse, originally the Drinkrow residence from Karaka Road in Beachlands, was relocated to its current site by the tennis club in 1995, using the Maraetai Boat Club’s tractor.

Developments

In March 2012, the back two courts were resurfaced with 16mm synthetic turf, providing a high-quality all-weather surface for members. This upgrade was partially funded by the Manukau City Council. The front two courts were resurfaced in August 2014 with assistance from the NZ Community Trust.

A volley wall was constructed in February 2014 between the tennis and netball courts, providing a new practice facility for the community. This project was a collaborative effort between the Maraetai Tennis Club, Pohutukawa Coast Netball Club, and Auckland Council.
